This Site All Started With a Pool

I'm Jake Johnson and installing a pool in my home was not easy. First, I had to make the decision. I live alone since my wife died a few years ago, and it seemed rather frivolous to spend money on a pool. I'm not old, but age was a bit of a factor. It seemed almost irresponsible and childish to want a pool at my age. After I committed, I had to find the right contractor. With so many variables (price, time, personality, etc.), it was a lot harder than I thought. Next, I had to work with the contractor to find the proper space and size and look. After months of construction, I had my pool, but then I had to learn a lot about the proper care and upkeep. Overall, though, my little foray into construction (even if I didn't do any of the really hard work) was informative and worthwhile!

Plant Flowers To Brighten Up Your Retaining Wall

Retaining walls can enhance your landscaping, and give your home curb appeal. Planting vines that trail up the wall, as well as flowers along the wall can turn a boring retaining wall into something beautiful.

Trailing Flowers and Vines

There are vines and flowers that will climb up a retaining wall. Trailing roses work well.  Visit a garden center to find climbing varieties. You may find floribundas, grandifloras, hybrid tea roses, etc. Plant the roses about a foot from the retaining wall.

If there is currently sod in the area, you will need to use a shovel to remove the top layer to reveal the soil. Once you do this, till up the area to loosen up the soil, add about two inches of compost, and mix it in with a rake or shovel.

Remove the first rose from the container, and dig a hole in the soil large enough for the root ball. Set the rose in the hole, and then push the soil into the hole. Use your hands to pat around the soil around the rose so it is firm. Repeat this until you have planted all your roses.

If you would rather have a vines, plant them in the same way.  Some vines you may want to consider include:

  • Virginia creeper
  • Potato vine
  • Grapevines
  • Honeysuckle
  • Asiatic jasmine

Visit a garden center who can tell you the best vines to plant that will grow best in your area.

The roses and/or vines will need some support until they reach the top of the wall.  You can use chicken wire against the wall to give them something to hold onto. You can also drill eye bolts in the wall to give them support.

Flowers Along The Wall

Stack bricks or stones a few feet from the wall, to give you enough room to plant flowers between it and the actual wall. About five feet or so should be enough, depending on how many flowers you want to plant. When you are finished, remove the sod, and loosen up the soil according to steps above.

You can plant annual flowers, which are flowers that grow for only one growing season. You can also plant perennials flowers, which will come back for you year after year.

The flowers you choose depend on what grows well in your area. A garden center can help you with that.

Think about the colors you want to use, as you may want to consider using colors that go well with each other. For example, you could use red and blue flowers, with some white mixed in. Pink and yellow go well together. Mix and match them at the garden center to see what you like best.

Talk with a contractor like about building a retaining wall for you. They can different types of bricks, stones, and even wood. They can also help you with placing it in the right area.
